Volunteering
700+ hours. 2,000+ students. Same standard as the paid work.
Volunteering is where the things I know stop belonging only to me. Mathematics, code, organisation and patience become much more useful once somebody else can actually do more because of them.
Intellectual & Social Duty
Knowledge is much less impressive sitting inside one person. The interesting part is transferring enough of it that somebody else becomes more capable.
Volunteering became the bridge between learning things and making them useful. Mathematics teaching, ecological work, and digital tools for schools look unrelated at first, but the instinct is the same: find friction, understand what people need, and leave behind a little more capacity than you found.
All of it ended up facing the same test, which is what still works once you have gone.
What happens when you leave the room?
A student asks. You answer. It feels like teaching. Then you go and sit your own exams, and find out what you actually built.
One person in this room understands it. That person is you. Everyone else is waiting.
- Stuck
- Understands it, for now
- Can explain it
A simplified model with invented numbers, not programme data.
The model is invented. The student is not.
Openly rejected mathematics.
Earned an A at O-Level.
Joined the Magic Box marking board.
Taught while I was sitting my A-Levels.
Went on to tutor more than 100 younger students.
Magic Box kept running through my exams because of people like that. It is still the best review my teaching has had.
